As the 13 berths of North Container Terminal are completed, the state of the art North Container Terminal at New Port ushers in the era of New Port in earnest.

Busan Port Authority (BPA) announced on June 10 that it held an opening ceremony for the 1-2 phase terminal with 200 officials from logistics and port related businesses and agencies including BPA president, Roh Ki-tae, being present at the ceremony.

The newly opened terminal located between 1-1 phase terminal and 2-1 terminal started construction at the end of 2004 and has a 1.2 km-long berth able to anchor three 50,000 ton-class vessels at the same time.

As the new 13 berths are completed, New Port now has 16 berths including the 3 berths completed in January 2006, which means that it can handle 5 million TEU per year.

New Port with 16~18m deep water has cutting edge equipment such as automated rail mounted gantry cranes and tandem cranes capable of handling four 20-feet containers at the same time. New Port handled 625,000 TEU during the January to April period, a 25% rise from the same period of last year.

An official at BPA said that the full opening of North Container Terminal of New Port will contribute to boosting the competitiveness of Busan Port, refreshing its commitment to expand the hinterland logistics complex of New Port for early vitalization.
